Reducing medical claims review time with AI on AWS: The EXL Medical IDP solution

EXL has developed an AI-powered Medical Intelligent Document Processing (IDP) solution on AWS to address the inefficiencies of manual medical claims review. Traditionally, insurance adjusters spend over 100 minutes per case analyzing complex, unstructured medical records, leading to delays and potential inaccuracies. The new solution combines EXL’s Xtrakto.AI for document ingestion with a domain-specific Large Language Model, the EXL Insurance LLM, fine-tuned on Amazon SageMaker AI. This pipeline automates extraction, summarization, and querying of clinical data while maintaining traceability and compliance with HIPAA regulations. By leveraging services like Amazon Bedrock, Textract, and Step Functions, the system transforms raw documents into actionable intelligence at enterprise scale. In real-world applications, the solution reduced review times from days to hours and significantly decreased manual effort for healthcare payers. The approach emphasizes augmentation over replacement, using human-in-the-loop validation to ensure quality and accuracy in regulated environments.
