Rendezvous Robotics Raises $20M in Seed Funding for Self-Assembling Spacecraft
aiinsider ·
Rendezvous Robotics has secured $20 million in seed funding to advance the development of modular spacecraft capable of autonomous self-assembly and reconfiguration in orbit. Led by MaC Venture Capital and Toyota Ventures, the investment will support flight demonstrations and team expansion ahead of a planned orbital test no earlier than April 2028. The upcoming mission involves deploying seven independent spacecraft tiles that will maneuver together to form a larger structure, separate, and then reconnect in a new configuration without external robotic assistance. This technology evolves from the TESSERAE research project originally developed by co-founder Ariel Ekblaw at MIT, which has previously undergone testing on Blue Origin’s New Shepard rocket and the International Space Station. Ground tests are currently underway, with a parabolic flight campaign scheduled for November 2026 to evaluate electromagnetic actuation under microgravity conditions. Additionally, a separate ISS experiment in December will attempt to assemble 32 tiles into a three-dimensional structure using fifth-generation hardware. The company aims to overcome traditional rocket fairing size limitations by creating scalable spacecraft that can expand or adapt their capabilities after launch.
