Replit is no longer working with Anthropic, CEO says
techcrunch ·
Replit CEO Amjad Masad announced at TechCrunch Disrupt that the company is no longer working with Anthropic as its primary partner, citing cost, performance, and partnership strength as key factors. While Replit previously relied on Anthropic’s Claude models and was a top-five customer, it has shifted its default AI provider to OpenAI following an August partnership announcement. Masad stated that OpenAI’s models consistently outperform competitors in building vibe-coded applications from scratch according to internal benchmarks. Despite this strategic shift, Replit remains model-agnostic, allowing users to still access Anthropic’s models if they choose, though ChatGPT is now the default option. This change is expected to significantly reduce Replit's spending with Anthropic since most customers stick with the default setting. However, insiders familiar with the partnership disputed Masad's claims, insisting the relationship between the two companies remains intact. Recent evidence from Replit’s website and social media suggests they were still promoting Anthropic products as recently as late September. Additionally, Masad highlighted Replit’s growing enterprise revenue, noting that B2B contracts now make up more than half of the company's income.
