Restate Closes $20M Series A as AI Agents Drive Demand for Durable Workflows
aiinsider ·
Berlin-based startup Restate has successfully closed a $20 million Series A funding round led by Singular, with additional participation from Redpoint Ventures and Capital One Ventures. The company was founded in 2022 by Stephan Ewen to create an execution engine capable of maintaining multistep workflows despite crashes or network interruptions. Although initially not designed for AI agents, the platform proved ideal for them due to their long-running, unpredictable paths that require precise tracking for consistent outcomes. Restate currently serves high-profile clients including Replit and several Fortune 500 financial firms, having recently secured significant six- and seven-figure contracts. To ensure speed and cost-effectiveness, the firm developed its own storage, replication, and redundancy layers rather than relying on external databases. This new capital positions Restate to compete directly with Temporal, which recently achieved a $12.55 billion valuation after raising $550 million. Co-founder Stephan Ewen, known for his work on Apache Flink, anticipates that durable execution will become as ubiquitous as traditional databases in the near future.
