Restate lands $20M as the need for durable infrastructure increases with AI agents
techcrunch ·
Berlin-based startup Restate has secured a $20 million Series A funding round to expand its durable workflow infrastructure, which is increasingly critical for managing AI agent processes. Co-founded by Stephen Ewan in 2022, the company originally built an execution engine resilient to crashes and network interruptions, inadvertently creating a perfect fit for the unpredictable nature of agentic workflows. The investment, led by Singular with participation from Redpoint Ventures and Capital One Ventures, positions Restate to compete directly with industry heavyweight Temporal. Despite being smaller than competitors, Restate has attracted high-profile clients such as Replit and various Fortune 500 financial institutions by offering a lightweight, fast architecture that does not rely on external databases. Ewan emphasizes that durability is essential for any system where mid-process failures must be automatically resolved to ensure consistent outcomes. The fresh capital will support hiring efforts for go-to-market and engineering teams, as well as office expansion in the San Francisco Bay Area. Looking ahead, Ewan predicts that durable infrastructure will become as fundamental as databases for companies across all industries, regardless of size or sector.
