Rethinking access control for RAG with Amazon Quick and Amazon Bedrock
aws ·
Enterprise organizations face significant security challenges when using Retrieval Augmented Generation (RAG) because AI systems must respect complex, source-specific permission structures. Traditional approaches that replicate access control lists (ACLs) into AI indexes often suffer from stale data and mapping errors, creating potential security gaps. To address this, AWS has implemented real-time ACL enforcement in Amazon Quick and Amazon Bedrock Knowledge Bases by verifying permissions directly with authoritative sources at query time. This hybrid architecture uses pre-retrieval filtering for performance followed by real-time verification to ensure only authorized content is included in AI responses. The solution eliminates security risks associated with sync delays or evolving data source capabilities, providing always-current permissions for users. Customers like Mondelēz International have adopted this approach to satisfy strict compliance requirements while scaling their AI initiatives across large workforces. By combining semantic search efficiency with rigorous, real-time security checks, AWS enables enterprises to democratize AI insights without compromising their existing security posture.
