Tokyo-based startup Sakana AI has appointed Jürgen Schmidhuber as its Chief Scientific Advisor, leveraging his foundational contributions to modern artificial intelligence. Schmidhuber is credited with pioneering deep learning techniques and world models in the early 1990s, which underpin much of today's AI advancements. His research on meta-learning and recursive self-improvement from 1987 continues to influence Sakana’s projects, including the Darwin Gödel Machine and The AI Scientist. The company aims to utilize his expertise to establish a new Recursive Self-Improvement (RSI) laboratory focused on creating self-reinforcing research loops. Schmidhuber expressed enthusiasm about bridging Japan’s legacy in neural networks and robotics with future physical AI systems. He emphasized that the next frontier of intelligence involves autonomous systems capable of understanding and interacting with the physical universe through world models. Sakana AI plans to gather a critical mass of top-tier experts in Tokyo to drive this innovative direction.
