Satlyt Announces $8M Seed to Run AI Models Across Satellites in Orbit
aiinsider ·
Satlyt, a startup with headquarters in Sunnyvale and Nairobi, has secured an $8 million seed funding round led by Non Sibi Ventures. The company aims to develop software that enables AI models to run directly on satellites, allowing them to share large computing workloads in orbit. Co-founder Rama Afullo describes the platform as a cross-layer solution similar to Android, contrasting it with hardware-focused companies like SpaceX. Earlier this year, Satlyt successfully ran Google DeepMind’s Gemma model on a Momentus spacecraft, reducing error transmission size by over 60%. This efficiency improvement could save satellite operators hundreds of thousands of dollars annually. The software is scheduled to launch aboard a TakeMe2Space satellite on a SpaceX mission, serving clients including NASA and Stellerian. Looking ahead, the company plans to demonstrate a shared cloud across two satellites next year and targets deployment on 20% of satellites by the end of the decade.
