Shopify Opens Checkout to Browser-Based AI Agents as Rivals Block Agentic Shopping
aiinsider ·
Shopify has officially enabled browser-based AI agents to complete purchases on merchant websites, marking a strategic divergence from competitors like Amazon and Adidas who are currently blocking such automated shopping. This update extends Shopify's previous support for WebMCP in storefronts and carts to include the checkout process, specifically supporting Shop Pay transactions. The new integration allows agents to read checkout screens, modify details such as addresses or delivery options, and submit orders with explicit buyer authorization. Unlike previous methods that relied on screenshots or scraping, these structured tools ensure accurate commerce information and compliance with required disclosures. Gil Greenberg, a staff product manager at Shopify, announced that this feature is rolling out to all eligible merchants and advised developers to utilize these specialized tools over human-oriented navigation. The browser-based WebMCP complements Shopify’s existing hosted MCP server for server-to-server agents, both operating under the Universal Commerce Protocol. Additionally, AI agents Muse and Instinct have partnered directly with Shopify, with the Instinct deal being announced alongside this release.
