SK Hynix in Talks With Intel to Manufacture AI Memory Chips in the US
aiinsider ·
Reuters, citing anonymous sources, reports that SK Hynix is discussing manufacturing RAM chips in the United States with Intel for the first time. The companies are considering several arrangements, including SK Hynix leasing space at Intel’s planned Ohio factory or creating a joint venture that could involve cloud service providers. SK Hynix said that no specific plan or arrangement has been finalized and described the discussions as part of a broader effort to strengthen its global competitiveness. The company is benefiting from strong demand for high-bandwidth memory used in AI data centers and is building a $3.8 billion advanced packaging facility in Indiana, with production expected to begin by 2029. The talks come as the Trump administration promotes domestic semiconductor manufacturing and considers import tariffs alongside relief for companies investing in US production. Any agreement involving sensitive chip technology could require review under South Korean law, while the companies previously partnered in 2020 when Intel sold its NAND flash-memory business to SK Hynix for $9 billion.
