SK Hynix reportedly in talks with Intel to build memory chips in US
techcrunch ·
South Korean semiconductor giant SK Hynix is reportedly in discussions with Intel to manufacture RAM chips in the United States for the first time. According to Reuters, the companies are exploring options such as SK Hynix leasing space at Intel’s planned factory in Ohio or forming a joint venture that might include cloud-service providers. SK Hynix confirmed it is evaluating various strategies to enhance global competitiveness but stated that no specific plans have been finalized yet. This potential collaboration comes as the Trump administration seeks to boost domestic chip production amid worsening global shortages and possible tariff adjustments. SK Hynix is already investing $3.8 billion in an advanced packaging facility in Indiana, with mass production expected by 2029. However, any agreement involving sensitive technology could face scrutiny under South Korean laws designed to prevent overseas transfer of strategic assets. The two firms have a prior business relationship, having completed a $9 billion NAND flash-memory acquisition by SK Hynix in 2020.
