South Korea’s financial industry hit by fresh wave of cyberattacks
techcrunch ·
South Korea's financial sector has suffered a new wave of cyberattacks targeting major firms including Daishin Securities, Mirae Asset Global Investments, and crypto exchange Bithumb. These incidents highlight the increasing threat of AI-driven hacking in Asia, occurring roughly a month after previous breaches linked to suspected Chinese hackers using an AI penetration testing tool called Artex. Daishin Securities confirmed that the personal information of 38,490 customers was exposed, while Mirae and Bithumb reported separate security issues without confirming data theft. In response, South Korea’s financial regulator has mandated stronger cybersecurity measures and plans to audit dozens of private IT systems. The attacks underscore broader regional vulnerabilities, coinciding with a recent incident involving GMO Internet in Japan. Although investigators have not established a direct connection between these various events across Asia, they point to years of weak cybersecurity infrastructure. Officials continue to investigate the root causes while affected companies cooperate with authorities and compensate for potential losses.
