SpaceX Locks In $40B Apollo-Backed GPU Lease to Expand AI Compute
aiinsider ·
SpaceX has secured a binding commitment for approximately $40 billion in financing to support its expansion of artificial intelligence compute infrastructure. The deal involves Apollo Global Management purchasing Nvidia’s next-generation Vera Rubin chips and server hardware, which will then be leased to SpaceX for about five years starting in the first half of 2027. This agreement is described as the largest committed GPU financing to date and is expected to close by the end of the year. CFO Bret Johnsen noted that the lease helps diversify funding and covers a significant portion of capital required for growth, highlighting that AI infrastructure investments are yielding returns in under a year. The financial move follows a strong third quarter where SpaceX’s AI segment contributed $7.6 billion to total revenue. Meanwhile, CEO Elon Musk criticized current debt market trends, arguing that lenders are excluding companies without non-AI revenue streams, predicting widespread consolidation among neocloud providers.
