Stripe agrees to buy OpenRouter as AI model routing expands
ainews ·
Stripe has agreed to acquire OpenRouter, an AI model-routing platform that lets developers access hundreds of models through a single API. OpenRouter supports over 400 models from more than 80 providers and routes requests based on factors such as task complexity, price, speed, and reliability, including failover and data-handling requirements. The acquisition builds on an existing partnership in which Stripe handled usage tracking and billing for OpenRouter users. Stripe has also been developing token-based billing tools, and OpenRouter provides detailed token usage data that supports such billing. Industry surveys cited in the article show widespread use of multiple AI models and rising enterprise token consumption. The financial terms were not disclosed, but Reuters reported the deal is worth slightly more than $8 billion.
