Stripe didn’t really buy OpenRouter because of the ‘singularity’
techcrunch ·
Stripe confirmed it is acquiring OpenRouter for $7.5 billion, a major increase from the startup's $1.3 billion valuation in May. Founders will reportedly receive $1.5 billion and investors $6 billion, with Stripe outbidding competitors like Databricks. While a leaked founders' letter jokingly cited the singularity, the real motive appears to be AI-driven economic growth and overlapping developer customer bases. OpenRouter is expected to continue operating independently after the deal closes. Analysts view the purchase as Stripe's attempt to embed itself in AI capital flows, specifically moving into AI expense management. Rivals such as Databricks, Rippling, and Ramp have also launched similar AI gateway or expense management products.
