Stripe says AI agent purchases are adding up, but it won't share the numbers

Stripe reports a significant surge in AI agent-driven transactions, with transaction volumes increasing 38-fold and payment volume growing 20-fold during September. Although the company declined to disclose specific monetary figures, executive Dan Hill noted that the absolute numbers are becoming significant despite starting from a small base. Approximately 200 agents, including Meta's Muse and Grok Bot, were utilizing Stripe's Link service for these purchases. Most individual transactions average around $100, though some involve high-value items like flights or furniture costing thousands of dollars. Retail accounts for 36 percent of transactions and 32 percent of the total volume, while travel represents 28 percent of the volume. The Link service enhances security by issuing separate 16-digit card numbers rather than sharing users' real credit card details. While Anthropic and OpenAI currently use Link, they do not yet facilitate agent purchases through it. Hill acknowledged that competitors like PayPal and Shopify’s Shop Pay exist but emphasized that the market remains in its early stages.
