Tesla Begins Optimus Production in Fremont, Working Toward 20K Robots Per Week
aiinsider ·
Tesla has commenced high-volume production of its Optimus humanoid robots at its Fremont, California facility, aiming for a weekly output of approximately 20,000 units. CEO Elon Musk indicated that achieving this production rate will likely take at least one year due to ongoing hardware and design adjustments. Deliveries to external companies are expected to begin around the end of 2027, initially targeting dangerous or repetitive industrial tasks rather than home use. Tesla is also advancing its Cybercab Robotaxi service, which recently logged nearly two million unsupervised miles in Austin and plans to expand to Dallas soon. The company faces regulatory scrutiny from the NHTSA regarding the safety certification of its driverless vehicles. Financially, Tesla reported flat revenue of $28.05 billion but saw a significant drop in net income as operating expenses increased. To support both driving and humanoid AI development, Tesla plans to reach 400 megawatts of training compute capacity by the end of the year.
