The FAA’s plan to fix air traffic? $875 million worth of AI
techcrunch ·
The FAA is facing a nationwide shortage of air traffic controllers and is exploring technology-based responses. It is expected to soon launch Smart, short for Strategic Management of Airspace, Routes and Trajectories, an automated program intended to streamline operations and help controllers manage workflows and flight routes more safely. Developed by Air Space Intelligence, Smart is described as a cloud-based platform that enhances existing FAA air traffic management systems. Its AI will analyze airline schedules, weather, airport capacity, airspace conditions, and operational constraints to forecast traffic flows and flag possible conflicts before they happen. The Wall Street Journal reports that the program will cost $875 million over 12 years, begin in the Washington, D.C., metropolitan area, and later expand to other regions. The FAA has also announced a major hiring plan and is participating in a broader modernization effort for the country's aging air traffic systems.
