This Is How Anthropic Thinks AI Agents Should Navigate the Physical World
wired ·
Anthropic has introduced the Model Hardware Standard, a framework defining how AI agents should interact with physical systems such as microscopes, liquid-handling equipment, quantum hardware, manufacturing machines, and robot arms. The company says the standard is intended to support scientific research and manufacturing while reducing risks associated with giving AI control over physical equipment. Anthropic plans to work with trusted partners on safety measures before making the framework generally available, and says safeguards built into AI models could help prevent misuse, including for harmful purposes. The initiative reflects a broader push to use AI agents to develop and test scientific hypotheses, potentially automating parts of the discovery process. Anthropic is also working with manufacturers to let AI coordinate multiple robotic systems and optimize factory-line operations without requiring bespoke code for each machine. The company says the standard will allow scientists and engineers to specify restrictions that help prevent equipment damage, injuries, and other mishaps, building on its earlier Model Context Protocol for software interactions.
