Tolan snags $30M for its AI companion that helps users navigate life
techcrunch ·
Tolan, an AI companion app designed to assist users with daily tasks, emotional support, and goal achievement, has secured an additional $30 million in funding. This latest investment from backers such as Union Square Ventures and Khosla Ventures doubles the startup's total capital raised and pushes its estimated valuation above $268 million. The platform currently boasts over 250,000 active users who have engaged in more than 70 million conversations, generating double-digit millions in annual recurring revenue through tiered memberships. Tolan distinguishes itself by maintaining a balance between helpfulness and social acceptability, avoiding the public backlash that affected competitors like Friend. While Character.ai recently filed for bankruptcy, Tolan faces emerging competition from advanced AI agents like Meta's Muse that focus on task execution. Despite its success, the company must navigate legal risks associated with AI-powered emotional support, including lawsuits alleging chatbot interactions contributed to user suicides.
