Top U.S. States for AI Data Centers And Infrastructure Growth
aiinsider ·
A study by TRG Datacenters ranked U.S. states best positioned for AI data center growth, with Virginia first, followed by Ohio, Tennessee, Georgia, and Texas. The ranking weighed factors such as large AI site counts, power capacity, electricity consumption, carbon emissions, and water stress rather than facility numbers alone. Virginia topped the list despite not having the most sites or capacity, while Ohio led in total power capacity at 1,410 megawatts. Texas, which had the most large AI sites, ranked fifth largely because nearly 59% of its mapped facilities are in high water stress areas. The article emphasizes that AI data centers' high electricity and cooling needs are making resource availability a key geographic constraint. It notes that states like Mississippi and Indiana also show significant capacity but vary in electricity use and environmental impact. The study serves as an assessment based on selected measures, not a definitive forecast, as other factors like utility costs and land also influence decisions.
