Toyota and Waymo have announced a partnership to manufacture autonomous bZ4X vehicles equipped with Waymo’s self-driving technology at Toyota's Takaoka plant in Japan. Fleet testing for these robotaxis is scheduled to commence in 2027, marking the first high-volume, domestically manufactured autonomous ride-hailing service in the country. The customized vehicles will feature enhanced accessibility elements such as automatic doors and extra rear legroom to improve the passenger experience. While initial operations focus on validation in Japan, the companies plan to expand deployment to the United Kingdom and other markets served by Waymo in subsequent years. Beyond ride-hailing, Toyota and Waymo are exploring how this autonomous technology could be integrated into personally owned vehicles to enhance safety. Both executives emphasized that the collaboration aims to reduce crashes caused by human error and improve transportation access for those with mobility challenges. Although specific financial terms and fleet sizes were not disclosed, the partnership highlights a shared commitment to achieving zero traffic accidents through advanced automation.
