Trump’s Anti-Bias AI Order Is Just More Bias
wired ·
The article argues that the Trump administration’s AI action plan and accompanying executive order claim to promote free speech, accuracy, and neutrality while imposing the administration’s own ideological definition of truth. It highlights provisions directing officials to remove references to misinformation, diversity, equity and inclusion, and climate change from earlier AI rules, and criticizes models that address racial bias or gender equality. The author says federal procurement rules could pressure AI companies to make their systems conform to the White House’s positions on history, climate change, and social issues. This is presented as a constitutional concern because companies may have First Amendment rights to shape model behavior and reduce bias according to their own principles. Major AI companies have largely avoided publicly opposing the policy, partly because the broader plan offers them substantial benefits, including support for infrastructure, research, and limits on state regulation. The article warns that government influence over AI could affect an increasingly important channel for news and information, while the White House maintains that it is pursuing genuine neutrality and avoiding the kind of censorship it attributes to China.
