UK Backs Robotics Adoption Hubs With £40M in Funding
aiinsider ·
The UK government has announced a £40 million investment to establish eight Robotics Adoption Hubs aimed at accelerating the deployment of robotics and autonomous systems across various sectors. These hubs will provide businesses and public services with expert advice, demonstrations, and practical support for implementing technologies in healthcare, agriculture, manufacturing, logistics, and waste management. The initiative includes specific projects such as the SHARP hub for surgical robotics and the Harvest hub in Lincoln for agri-food applications. Additionally, £1.7 million is allocated for a national coordinating body led by The Welding Institute, while £2.5 million supports twelve training projects to address workforce shortages in robotic integration and maintenance. Government officials estimate that maximizing robotics adoption could add up to £150 billion to the UK economy by 2035, significantly higher than the current estimated contribution of £6.4 billion. Minister for AI Kanishka Narayan emphasized that these hubs are designed to help organizations overcome uncertainty and move from considering robotics to deploying proven systems. The program operates alongside existing facilities like the National Robotarium and aims to strengthen local economies through increased productivity and job creation.
