UK Commits £600M to Counter AI-Driven Health and Security Threats
aiinsider ·
The UK government has announced a £600 million investment package aimed at mitigating health and security risks associated with artificial intelligence. A significant portion of this funding supports a new biosecurity initiative, including £100 million for an AI Biosecurity Lab designed to detect biological threats and £65 million for developing pathogen countermeasures. Major tech companies such as OpenAI and Anthropic are contributing up to £200 million in model credits to support these efforts, while Google DeepMind and Basecamp Research will also provide assistance. The existing AI Security Institute will receive an additional £120 million, and £130 million is allocated for cyber defense projects protecting critical infrastructure. Further funds include £60 million each for robotics and manufacturing adoption, as well as AI research procurement. Smaller allocations cover chip design education, public policy challenges, and regional mayoral initiatives. AI Minister Kanishka Narayan stated the goal is to establish the biosecurity lab as a global institution for scientific expertise.
