UN turns to Google to make its global data ready for AI agents

The United Nations is working with Google to make its extensive collection of global statistics easier for people and AI systems to access. The new UN System Data Commons, built on Google’s open-source Data Commons platform, supports natural-language searches and the Model Context Protocol (MCP), replacing the more traditional UNData portal. A UNICEF benchmark of six large language models found an average accuracy of 21.2% across more than 133,000 questions about global development indicators, with many responses lacking usable numbers or changing between repeated tests. The benchmark is an unpublished working paper that has not yet undergone peer review. Twenty-six UN entities have committed to the platform, with data from nearly 20 available at launch, and the UN aims to add 80% of its statistical datasets by 2027. Google.org provided $2 million in funding and technical support, while the platform is hosted under UN governance and is intended to become independently maintained and operated by the UN. The system records the sources of statistics and allows AI agents to combine indicators into dashboards, charts, and analysis, but Google cautions that humans should review AI-generated conclusions before citing or publishing them.
