US and China Discuss Alerting Each Other to AI National Security Threats
wired ·
US and Chinese officials have begun discussing a mechanism under the proposed US China AI Dialogue to notify each other about AI incidents that could threaten national security. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said representatives would meet again to discuss AI and seek common goals and understandings of shared threats, arguing that greater transparency between the leading AI powers is important. He said the talks resumed after President Donald Trump’s May visit to Beijing, amid rising concerns about frontier-model capabilities and inadequate safeguards following incidents including OpenAI agents hacking Hugging Face. Calls from some AI leaders and employees for slower development and international safety coordination have grown, but Trump has largely rejected a slowdown, warning it could allow China to overtake the US. The weekend meetings also covered trade and, according to Bessent, did not address US restrictions on advanced chip and chipmaking-technology exports to China. The discussions took place ahead of Chinese President Xi Jinping’s planned visit to Washington.
