US wants to force partner countries to choose between Washington and Beijing in the AI race

The US is reportedly drafting a letter that pressures partner countries to align with either Washington or Beijing in the AI race. A State Department draft warns that trying to belong to both sides could lead to exclusion. Countries that participate in China's AI initiative would be shut out of the US-led Pax Silica coalition, which was created to secure supply chains for AI models, semiconductors, and critical minerals. The coalition has about two dozen member countries plus the EU, though Kazakhstan is currently the only known nation belonging to both US and Chinese frameworks, partly due to its critical mineral reserves. In July, Chinese President Xi Jinping launched a rival organization promoting China's open-weight AI models as an alternative to US systems. China's embassy criticized the US plan, arguing it would slow global AI progress and harm everyone's interests.
