Vals AI, a San Francisco-based startup specializing in AI evaluation and model auditing, has secured $40 million in Series A funding at a $400 million valuation. The round was led by a16z, with participation from existing investors 8VC and Bloomberg Beta, as well as new backers HRT Ventures and Next Ladder Ventures. The company intends to use the capital to scale its testing infrastructure, pursue global enterprise customer growth, and expand its engineering and machine learning teams. Founded by Rayan Krishnan and Langston Nashold, the platform conducts automated benchmark testing of AI models across regulated sectors such as corporate law, banking, engineering, and healthcare. It acts as an independent auditor for enterprises, research labs, and governments, identifying hallucinations, security flaws, and comparative model performance before deployment. Additionally, Vals AI unveiled new offerings, including Vals Smith for creating custom coding benchmarks from GitHub repositories, and Frontier Risk Benchmarks featuring an RSI Index developed with CoreWeave, a cybersecurity benchmark built with academics, and preliminary mental health evaluation work. The company also refreshed its website and broadened its Vals Index to cover more economic sectors.
