VMware migration reduces Tottenham Hotspur's licensing fees by 85 percent

Tottenham Hotspur, a Premier League soccer club, replaced its stadium's VMware virtualization with Hewlett-Packard Enterprise's Morpheus VM Essentials, cutting licensing fees by over 85 percent. The club's CTO, Rob Pickering, attributed the move partly to issues stemming from Broadcom's takeover of VMware, which changed commercial structures and client engagement. The migration is part of a broader overhaul of the stadium's data center and network, using HPE ProLiant servers, Alletra Storage MP, and management via HPE GreenLake and OpsRamp. Pickering noted that while savings were a major factor, integrating virtualization into a wider AI operations stack provides even greater value than just switching vendors. He also said HPE's virtualization capabilities exceed VMware's in certain respects. With a technology team of only about 35 people, the club depends on AI operations to proactively identify and resolve issues without manual input.
