VMware releases vSphere Express for virtualization on up to 128 cores

VMware has introduced vSphere Express, a new low-cost virtualization product designed to appeal to small and medium-sized businesses (SMBs) that were previously alienated by Broadcom's enterprise-focused strategy. This offering provides essential features like vMotion and high availability for up to 128 cores at an annual subscription price of $9,600, which is significantly lower than the flagship VMware Cloud Foundation bundle. The release marks a strategic shift after many SMB customers complained about being pushed toward expensive, complex solutions or told that previous entry-level options were discontinued. While the product allows for frequent updates similar to higher-tier versions, it only supports discrete instances without centralized management capabilities. Industry analysts suggest this move is an attempt by Broadcom to retain smaller clients who might otherwise migrate to competitors due to cost concerns. However, some long-time partners and users remain skeptical, citing broken trust and past aggressive sales tactics as major barriers to adoption. Despite these challenges, the simplified pricing aims to provide a viable alternative for organizations unable to immediately afford a full platform migration.
