Walmart Opens Its Doors to AI Shopping Agents With New Agent Gateway
aiinsider ·
Walmart has launched a new Agent Gateway to support AI shopping agents, marking a strategic divergence from competitors like Amazon that are currently blocking such technology. Introduced by CEO John Furner at the Masters of Scale Summit, this initiative prepares the retailer for a future where AI agents become mainstream tools for consumers. The gateway functions as an MCP server, allowing approved agents to search inventory and make purchases on behalf of users without requiring them to share sensitive personal data or purchase history. To enhance security and control, Walmart is introducing Agent Profiles next month, which will enable shoppers to authorize specific agents, view separate transaction records, and set spending limits or per-transaction approval requirements. The company has established strict terms for these agents, prohibiting them from exceeding user intent, accessing payment information, or collecting unnecessary data. Furthermore, standard returns processes will apply even if an agent acts improperly, and non-compliant agents will be blocked from the system. This approach builds upon existing integrations with major AI platforms such as Meta’s Muse, ChatGPT, and Gemini.
