Walmart Opens Its Doors to AI Shopping Agents With New Agent Gateway
aiinsider ·
Walmart has launched a new Agent Gateway to facilitate shopping via AI agents, adopting an open approach that contrasts with competitors like Amazon who are restricting such access. The initiative, announced by CEO John Furner at the Masters of Scale Summit, aims to prepare for a future where AI agents become mainstream in retail. This technology integrates with existing partnerships involving Meta’s Muse and popular AI applications like ChatGPT and Gemini. The gateway functions as an MCP server, allowing approved agents to search inventory and make purchases without requiring customers to share sensitive personal data or purchase history. To enhance security and control, Walmart is introducing Agent Profiles next month, which will enable shoppers to authorize specific agents, view separate transaction records, and set spending limits. The retailer has established strict terms for these agents, prohibiting them from exceeding user intent, accessing payment information, or collecting unnecessary data. Non-compliant agents will be blocked, while standard returns processes will apply even if an agent makes errors.
