Washington Won’t Be Regulating AI Anytime Soon
wired ·
Despite growing concerns about the risks of frontier AI models, Washington is unlikely to implement significant regulation in the near future. The White House has abandoned plans for a FINRA-style oversight agency after President Trump and tech executives, including Mark Zuckerberg and David Sacks, expressed strong opposition. Trump has dismissed AI safety warnings as a hoax, further stalling any federal initiative. In Congress, competing bills such as the bipartisan Frontier Act face insurmountable partisan hurdles and lack sufficient votes for passage. Proponents of independent auditors argue they could stop dangerous models, but critics fear such measures would put the US at a disadvantage against China. Alternative proposals involving government-enforced kill switches have received only modest interest from Silicon Valley leaders. Consequently, with no unified legislative path or executive support, effective AI governance remains stalled indefinitely.
