Waymo Plans Fully Autonomous Ride-Hailing Service in Singapore for 2028
aiinsider ·
Waymo has announced plans to launch a fully autonomous, all-electric ride-hailing service in Singapore in 2028, subject to regulatory approval. The Alphabet-owned company is working with Singapore’s Ministry of Transport and Land Transport Authority, and the service would be accessed through the Waymo app. Waymo will initially bring electric Jaguar I-PACE vehicles to Singapore, while trained autonomous specialists will drive them manually in 2027 to adapt the Waymo Driver system to local roads and monsoon conditions. Singapore said Waymo will become its newest autonomous vehicle operator alongside ComfortDelGro and Grab, with authorities overseeing safety and regulatory requirements and supporting affected drivers through retraining and transition programs. The service is intended to complement public transit, including first- and last-mile connections, and will use lidar, radar, and cameras to monitor surrounding road users. Waymo reports more than 20 million fully autonomous rides, over 300 million autonomous kilometers driven, and a 94% reduction in injury-causing crashes compared with human drivers in the U.S. cities where it operates autonomously.
