Western mathematicians fear AI makes them dumber while China builds an entire alliance for it

A stark contrast has emerged in the global mathematical community regarding the integration of artificial intelligence. In China, Fields Medal winner Shing-Tung Yau launched the 'Yau Laboratory Alliance for Mathematics and Artificial Intelligence' in Beijing to accelerate AI adoption in research. This new alliance unites eight institutions with the goal of creating a network of over 1,000 researchers to develop specialized models and machine-verifiable proofs. Conversely, Western mathematicians are expressing deep skepticism about the technology's impact on their field. Prominent figures, including Terence Tao and Peter Scholze, worry that reliance on AI-generated proofs erodes genuine mathematical understanding and creates dangerous dependencies. Some members of the Western community have even called for a boycott of automated submissions due to concerns about transparency and insight. While China aims to build transparent AI reasoning systems, the West remains divided on whether AI offers true insight or merely brute-forces solutions.
