Why Crypto Could Be AI’s Payment Layer: BlackRock Sees Stablecoins Connecting Commerce and Compute
aiinsider ·
A new BlackRock report titled 'The Machine-Native Economy' argues that stablecoins and blockchain protocols could serve as the payment layer for an increasingly automated AI economy. The firm suggests that while traditional financial rails are suited for human consumers, they are less efficient for the high-volume, micro-transactions required by autonomous AI agents buying data or computing power. Stablecoins are identified as the likely leading instrument due to their programmability via smart contracts and stability compared to volatile cryptocurrencies. Emerging protocols from companies like Coinbase, Stripe, and Google aim to facilitate these machine-to-machine transactions with necessary authorization and identity checks. Beyond payments, BlackRock envisions a future market for standardized, tokenized claims on computing capacity, allowing agents to purchase GPU time programmatically. However, the report acknowledges significant hurdles, including technical fragmentation, regulatory compliance, and the non-uniform nature of compute resources. While stablecoin transaction volumes have grown rapidly, BlackRock notes this does not yet replace mainstream systems like ACH or card networks. Ultimately, the vision requires trusted identity systems and clear recourse mechanisms before autonomous agent commerce can scale effectively.
