Why Deploying Physical AI at Scale Demands Safety at Every Layer
nvidia ·
As physical AI systems like autonomous vehicles and industrial robots move toward large-scale deployment, safety must be integrated across every layer of the technology stack. NVIDIA argues that traditional one-time checks are insufficient for machines operating in dynamic, shared environments with humans. To address this, the company has developed Halos, a full-stack safety system designed to ensure reliability from hardware design through to final deployment. The framework covers critical components such as functional safety engineering, sensor fusion, and AI behavior assurance using simulation and synthetic data. For autonomous vehicles, Halos leverages platforms like DRIVE AGX Thor and the Alpamayo model to provide explainability and traceable safety evidence. In robotics, the solution utilizes IGX Thor modules and tools like Isaac Lab to validate robot behavior against edge cases. Major industry partners including Geely, Nissan, and Agility Robotics are already integrating these technologies into their products. Independent bodies like TÜV SÜD and TÜV Rheinland are actively certifying these systems to meet international standards such as ISO 26262.
