Why Telecom Operators Are Building Their AI Strategy on Open Models
nvidia ·
Telecom operators are increasingly adopting open AI models to build trusted, customizable, and governable workflows for critical operations. According to NVIDIA’s latest report, 89% of industry respondents consider open source models important to their AI strategy due to benefits like cost efficiency, customization, and regulatory compliance. These models allow telcos to fine-tune systems using proprietary network data while maintaining visibility into model behavior. Major operators like SoftBank Corp. and AT&T are leveraging open foundations to develop specialized telecom models and match workloads to the right performance and control levels. NVIDIA supports this shift with tools such as the Nemotron family and end-to-end fine-tuning pipelines via NeMo libraries. This approach enables flexible deployment across public clouds, private infrastructure, and edge environments. Operators can also deliver locally adapted services, as demonstrated by Indosat Ooredoo Hutchison’s culturally tailored Sahabat-AI models. Ultimately, open models provide a scalable path for integrating autonomous AI into production-ready telecom workflows.
