World model companies are keeping a lot of secrets
techcrunch ·
The article examines why companies developing AI world models remain unusually secretive about their commercial plans. At a panel, AMI Labs co-founder Michael Rabbat said the company is still in a research and building phase and would not discuss products or timelines. World Labs’ Marble is among the most developed offerings, with demonstrations involving media creation, explorable video-game environments, and CGI, while the broader technology could also support robotics, autonomous driving, manufacturing, biomedicine, and medical AI. Even Physicl CEO Alex de Vigan, whose company supplies data to world-model developers, said he does not know exactly what customers are building. The article argues that strong fundraising allows these companies to postpone choosing a market, while secrecy helps delay competition from rival startups and larger labs such as OpenAI and Anthropic. It compares this strategy to a “dark forest” scenario in which companies avoid attracting attention until they are ready to reveal their work.
