XPeng Starts Production Lines for Humanoid Robot ‘Iron’
aiinsider ·
XPeng announced that the first unit of its humanoid robot, Iron, has come off new production lines, with initial use planned in its own stores ahead of a broader market launch in China and overseas by 2027. The company said over 80% of core manufacturing is automated and that it borrowed quality-control practices from its electric-vehicle operations. Iron is designed with a fully enclosed flexible lattice structure, 76 degrees of freedom across its body, and 21 in each hand. It is powered by three XPeng Turing AI chips giving up to 2,250 TOPS, allowing the company's physical AI foundation model to run on-device for autonomous tasks without remote operation. XPeng recently raised more than $900 million for the robotics unit at a post-money valuation above $6.3 billion. The company views robotics as a second growth curve after automotive, and it expects advanced humanoid robots to carry significantly higher gross margins per unit than new-energy vehicles.
