Y Combinator’s Garry Tan uses AI agents so much, he spends up to $200K a year on tokens
techcrunch ·
Y Combinator CEO Garry Tan revealed on Walter Isaacson’s podcast that he spends between $100,000 and $200,000 annually on AI tokens to power his extensive use of AI agents. Tan utilizes these agents for a wide range of tasks, including coding, research preparation, and managing personal data such as emails, notes, and even therapy records spanning two decades. He describes the experience as having a constant, autonomous assistant like Jiminy Cricket that helps him anticipate needs and navigate complex decisions. Tan emphasizes that users should treat AI agents more like human collaborators rather than rigid traditional software to maximize their potential. Y Combinator has also implemented an internal agent named Stray Light, which possesses comprehensive context about all founders and applications associated with the accelerator. While Tan acknowledges that his high spending is a privilege not accessible to everyone, he believes personal AI will become mainstream once costs decrease significantly. He argues against Big Tech-controlled algorithms, advocating instead for personalized AI tools that users can own and program themselves.
