Your Next Great Read Might Be Certified ‘Organic’
wired ·
Amid growing concerns over AI-generated content, a British startup called Books by People has launched a certification mark for "organic literature" to identify books written exclusively by humans. The Intellectual Property Office in the UK has approved this thumbprint-style stamp, which publishers can display on book covers to signal human authorship. Unlike previous self-declaration schemes, this certification involves proprietary software analysis and manual review of early drafts and research materials to detect signs of humanity. Five publishers have already signed up, with the first certified book expected by the end of the year. This initiative responds to recent scandals involving suspected AI use in publishing, which have shaken public trust in the industry's traditional reliance on authenticity. While some industry leaders praise the move as a necessary statement of values, others warn against the potential for false positives and excessive scrutiny of authors. Critics argue that detection tools are imperfect and that the burden should remain on platforms to disclose AI use rather than forcing authors to prove their humanity.
