YouTube Music launches new labels as AI-generated music floods streaming platforms
techcrunch ·
YouTube Music has introduced a new labeling system to increase transparency regarding songs created with generative AI. Listeners can now easily identify tracks involving AI in composition or vocals through labels displayed on the player page and within the main YouTube app. These labels provide detailed information about the specific role AI played in the track's creation, based on declarations from music partners using three categories: Fully Gen AI, Partly Gen AI, or No Gen AI. This initiative arrives as other streaming platforms like Apple Music, Spotify, Deezer, and TIDAL adopt their own methods for handling AI-generated content. Unlike competitors that may exclude AI tracks from recommendations or withhold royalties, YouTube focuses on disclosure rather than blanket restrictions. Consequently, AI involvement does not automatically disqualify a track from monetization on the platform. The move aligns with YouTube's broader experimentation in AI-powered music tools, such as Dream Track.
