Zuckerberg's Biohub leads a $1.8 billion push to build AI models that predict cell behavior

Biohub, a nonprofit organization supported by Mark Zuckerberg and Priscilla Chan, is spearheading a $1.8 billion initiative to develop artificial intelligence models capable of predicting cell behavior. This effort aims to accelerate drug development by integrating data, laboratory equipment, and computing resources over a five-year period known as the Virtual Biology Initiative. Major contributors include Meta, Google DeepMind, and Isomorphic Labs, which are providing a combined $300 million, while the US Department of Energy is investing more than $500 million for lab measurements and compute power. The National Institutes of Health are coordinating datasets previously funded by over $500 million in federal money, with Biohub responsible for standardizing this data for AI training. Under the agreement, commercial partners receive one year of exclusive access to their contributed data before it becomes publicly available, whereas government-funded work remains unrestricted from the start. A first dataset is expected to be ready within approximately one year. Other technology firms such as Anthropic and the OpenAI Foundation are also advancing biological research through separate funding and laboratory initiatives.
